Feeling nervous about speaking Japanese?

If you feel nervous about speaking Japanese, you are not alone.
Many adult learners feel exactly the same way at the beginning.

You might be thinking:

  • “What if I make mistakes?”

  • “What if I don’t understand?”

  • “What if I sound strange?”

These feelings are completely normal. In fact, most confident Japanese speakers you see today once felt exactly like you do now.

The good news is this: speaking Japanese does not have to feel stressful. With the right approach, it can feel calm, enjoyable, and even fun.

Why speaking Japanese feels difficult at first

For many learners from Taiwan, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia, speaking Japanese feels challenging for a few common reasons.

1. Fear of making mistakes

Many learners believe they must speak perfectly before they speak at all. This creates pressure and hesitation.

In reality, mistakes are not a problem — they are part of learning.

2. Different sentence structure

Japanese word order is different from English and many Asian languages.
This can make learners feel slow or unsure when forming sentences.

But this is completely normal. With practice, it becomes natural.

3. Lack of speaking opportunities

Many learners study grammar and vocabulary but do not have enough chances to speak.

Speaking is a skill — it improves through use, not memorization.

A calmer way to learn Japanese

From my experience teaching adult learners, I have found that confidence grows best in a calm and supportive environment.

A gentle learning approach includes:

✔ Speaking slowly and naturally

There is no need to rush. Speaking slowly helps both accuracy and confidence.

✔ Learning step by step

Small progress is still progress. Even short sentences are meaningful.

✔ Accepting mistakes

Mistakes are welcome. They show that you are learning actively.

✔ Focusing on communication

The goal is not perfection — the goal is connection.

What beginners really need

Many beginners believe they need more grammar or vocabulary before speaking.

Actually, what most learners need is:

  • a relaxed atmosphere

  • clear explanations

  • structured guidance

  • and encouragement

With these elements, learners improve much faster than they expect.

My experience teaching international learners

Before moving to Australia, I worked in the medical field in Japan, where I supported many non-Japanese speakers with communication.

This experience shaped my teaching style to be patient, empathetic, and easy to understand.

I warmly welcome learners from Taiwan, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia, and I have experience supporting students from many different cultural backgrounds.

Many of my students tell me they feel relaxed and safe in my lessons, and that they gain confidence without feeling pressured or rushed.

What you can expect in my lessons

In my lessons, we focus on practical and natural Japanese for real-life situations.

You will learn:

  • natural conversation skills

  • clear pronunciation

  • useful grammar

  • polite expressions and Keigo

  • travel and daily-life Japanese

  • cultural understanding behind expressions

We move step by step at a comfortable pace, so you can enjoy learning without stress.

Japanese is not as difficult as you think

Many learners discover that Japanese becomes easier once they begin speaking regularly.

Why?

Because Japanese is:

  • logical

  • consistent

  • structured

With the right support, progress often happens faster than expected.

A message for beginners

If you feel nervous, please remember:

👉 You do not need to be perfect.
👉 You do not need to speak quickly.
👉 You only need to start.

Confidence grows naturally with practice.
